Have you as a teenager/young man ever been made fun of or yelled at because you’re not strong enough, “manly” enough, or just weak? Well, this is how society and people are socializing you, me and every young man today. Socialization and how people are socialized is what I have been learning about in class and it means to follow everyone else and act how they are. You could also see this as a “mask” or disguise to blend in. If every boy was socialized in a positive way, we wouldn’t have as much crime or drugs, because everyone would mostly be happy. As a young man, my parents, media, and my community have been and are socializing me to be many different people all at once. My parents are socializing me to be a man in a positive way unlike the media, which is negatively socializing me and these two together are socializing me like my community in a negative and positive way.
Since I grow with my family and not another family they socialized me in certain ways. Being a boy with an older sister, I thought I had to grow up faster, and I still thought that it was my “manly” duty to protect my sister and make sure that she was going to be okay. All of my socialization from the ages of 9-10 was changed forever when one day, after school, my sister stood up for me, and then I realized that I could take my mask off and live out of the socialization guidelines. As a kid, I had a wild imagination, and my mom and dad both said to me, “Be who you want to be, and don’t listen to people that are judging you for who you are!” I took this as one of my first serious lessons from any one and held on to that lesson and I still am to this day. Since I have never let go of this advice or lesson, I have broken out of that horrible socialization chain or wheel, and I can live free. This lesson also helped me achieve freedom and express myself. Across America “American schools harbor approximately 2.1 million bullies and 2.7 million of their victims,” said Dan Olweus of National School Safety Center 1. I have never been bullied for more than a day, and that’s because I don’t listen to them. I’m not saying this will work for everyone; I’m just saying being myself and ignoring bullies is how I have managed not to get bullied.
The community of Durango, Colorado is very small, as we all know, but that doesn’t stop it from socializing me and everyone else. In this community, I, as a boy, can be socialized mostly in a good way in Durango, but sometimes in a bad way, in my point of view. Durango is like every other town or city; it has its good sides and bad sides. To show you this, if you were to walk downtown in Durango, you would mostly find friendly people that are nice and loving, but if you were to walk down in a back alley behind Needham Elementary, you would expect just as many people to be nice and open. Back to me, I personally think that the people in downtown or in suburbia Durango are nice and they encourage me to act well and be nice to others. Another part of town would be a total change; people might ask me to do drugs and drink; they might say things like, “It’s cool to drink and do drugs” or “to be cool, you have to steal and cheat other people out of their money”. Not to be stereotyping or anything, but this is my view of the community of Durango and how it affects me. Overall, Durango’s community affects me in a neutral way; it’s just the way that you pick.
Growing up in the 20th and 21st century, media has been everywhere and effects everyone and everything, one way or another. Me, being a teenage boy, I am the most aimed at group in America, according to Alive.com2 about teenagers and social media for advertising and everything media related. Media could affect me in a good way, but that’s not how the system works; they want you to feel bad about yourself, so you buy their product or act the way they want you to. One example of this is the covers and articles of Men’s Health. On the front cover of all of their magazines, they have an attractive, muscularly, man and next to it, there is a subtitle that says, “Be a man and have a six pack or get ripped or even, ‘don’t be a geek they never get the girl.’” Since Men’s Health thinks and writes how to get a girl, all the popularity makes it seem right for me to think that’s how to get a girl and do everything, but fortunate for me, I don’t think that way. Media these day is all about the product and consumer, and if they can get me or a small group for young men to think that they have the “cool” product, they will win everyone like some groups and companies have won me, and I wear or use their products because I think they are cool.
With my family, my community, and the media all socializing me to grow up in different ways I could have turned out in millions of options. Luckily I turned out how I wanted to turn out. From the beginning I always believed in my family to socialize me in a good way and always thought they would be the best path to follow if I followed any at all. I like who I am, how I’m turning out to be, and my freedom of being whom and what I want to be. The reason I turned out to be or what I think the reason is because I’m following my parent’s footsteps. My parents showed the way they thought was best for me and not anyone else’s. Another reason I think I turned out this way is because I ignored the negative socialization and all the bad people that roam this planet. The Final reason I think I’m turning out to be is because of how I am growing up not with drugs, family issues or anything else bad. I’m not saying you will turn out bad if you have bad things happen to you I’m just saying that you will decide your future and no one else.
As I said at the beginning my parents are socializing me to be a man in a positive way unlike the media which are negatively socializing me. These two together are socializing me like my community in a negative and positive way. My parents are and did socialize me in a good way because of their past experience with my sister and other life situations. The media are socializing me in a bad way because all they want is money and they will make you feel bad about yourself to get you and me to buy their products. Finally my community is like the good side and bad side of everything the people of Durango can be positively affecting me or negatively affecting me. I think it is important that I would turn out right because I am part of the next generation. I have been socialized in positive and negative ways but was able to break out of the system of socialization. I realized how much every man is socialized during their lives and I figured out how corrupted the system really is. I believe that I turned out good and was socialized in the right way.

Socialization Reflection
1. In my mask I’m most proud the colors. To begin, I’m proud of my masks colors because I think they really reflect on how I was socialized. As an example the red, black, and gold represents my mom as she is a German. Another reason I’m proud of the color on my mask is because I put a lot of work into painting it very delicately. Finally I’m proud of my masks colors because it shows everyone who I am in the world.
2. One of the parts that I’m most proud of in my mask essay is “Since I have never let go of this advice or lesson, I have broken out of that horrible socialization chain or wheel, and I can live free. This lesson also helped me achieve freedom and express myself. Across America “American schools harbor approximately 2.1 million bullies and 2.7 million of their victims,” said Dan Olweus of National School Safety Center 1.” I’m most proud of this part of my essay because of the evidence that I put into it. In another reason I like this part of my essay is how it is flowing and well written.
3. The biggest take away from this project that I got I think is to see how everyone is socialized differently and the same. I think This was the biggest take away because it shocked me how much I was taught. Another reason this was a take away is because I finally saw all of the truth
4. A habit of heart and mind that I need to work on is refinement. I need to work on this because I haven’t made my work as good as it could be. An example is how my lines on my mask weren’t that strait or solid
