Slaughter house 5 Seminar Reflection
Slaughter house Five seminar reflection
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut is a book a read recently and had a seminar on it. We had a group and we discussed the book and what we all thought about this book that can have many different views. One view that I found very interesting was the idea that the main character Billy and every character in the book was just one part of Kurt Vonnegut’s experiences in the war. This idea challenged all of us and we had to see the book in a whole new light. This one comment made me think that the book was almost just a third person diary for Kurt Vonnegut. It made me believe that every character was just another moment and it was just a sweater falling apart into a pill of confusing strings. Another comment that really made me think was why the book doesn’t focus mainly on the bombing of Dresden. The comment was that this book doesn’t talk about Dresden because it has so many other ideas going on it can’t explain them all. I think that this is true and the book is a pill of confusion the needs to be put together with several read overs.
One of the major Questions that I thought was interesting is “Did Billy really get kidnapped by aliens and travel in time?”. To answer these questions I will first split it up and answer the first one. Did Billy really get kidnapped by the aliens? In my own opinion I think that Billy never did get abducted and just had a flashback or be black out. For example on page 156 It says “ Billy, knowing the plane was going to crash pretty soon closed his eyes, traveled in time back to 1944”. Seeing that Billy can close his eyes and “travel”. This seems to me that he could have done that with the aliens and it could have been a dream. For the second Part does Billy travel in time? I do not think Billy ever travel in time I think that he is always in the same place because he can never affect anything and he also closes his eyes to time travel. As I showed above he just closes his eyes and travels so this could mean that he Is just dreaming at one point.
One thing that we talked about a lot in the seminar was why the book didn’t focus more on Dresden. I think that it didn’t focus more no Dresden because of all the other idea that were happening in the back. Also that he didn’t want to talk just all bout no bad point in time. One way that this connects the real world is the news and my life. In the news people always question why something was or wasn’t in the news. It’s because there is only so much space and that it all can’t fit in. Just like the book they have to pick the content that goes into it. The way it connects to my life is in the Friday show. We have to find the right ideas out of many and make sure we don’t overload on one idea in particular.
A connection between All Quiet on the Western Front and Slaughterhouse five is the idea of how bad war really is. The connection that war is bad in both books works for the following reasons. First, both books focus on a horrible war in history that cannot be covered up. Next, it is that both of these books have a main character that is mentally and physically changed by this war in not a good way. Finally both of these books have the harsh loss of life that is noticed. For example In Kurt’s book Billy is always saying so it goes meaning there is nothing that can stop this bad thing from happening. For AQotWF At the end of the book the main character losses his last friend and sees that he can do nothing but walk away from the war after it is finished.
All Quiet in then Western Front
We recently had a seminar about the book All Quiet on the Western Front. I feel that this was my best seminar I have had at animas high school. I feel this way because of how in depth my group and I went. The one big thing that hit me and made me become more involved was this contrary idea. The idea was that the book was antiwar novel. The author is constantly showing or more so explaining how gruesome WW1 actually is. Most people would see this as he is trying to explain how bad war is for everything but my group saw it differently. We saw it as he is trying to explain it for what it truly is. This made me think that this book was just an informational guide about the war so that others could see the war. In no way did he ever state war was bad or war should not happen. So after just one idea it change my whole thought of how this book is not anti war it’s just helping us understand the truth about war.
Reading the book All Quiet on the Western Front and seeing how are truly is has changed my perception of war. To begin, the book has shown me how gruesome war can actually be. For example on page, 63 horses are in the battlefield dying “The belly of one is ripped open, the guts trail out.” This really showed me that war can get as bad as animal dying. Another way this book changed my perspective on war was all the friends of Paul’s died and how no one cared. The last one of Paul’s friends to die was on page 290 “I looked at him without comprehending. He pointed to Kat.”He is stone dead.” Finally, this book changed my perspective on war because it didn’t just effect them physically but also mentally. When Paul came back from leave it was like he had gotten a whole new personality. He said, “I ought never to have come on leave.” on page 185. All together, this book changed my perspective on war in main ways.
A connection I had whenever I was in the seminar was all the news about solider health care. In my group, we talked about how poor the conditions were for ww1 soldiers. I instantly thought of all the soldiers with health problems and killing people in the news. For example, in the military now a day we have good living conditions, but in WW1 you had to pee where you slept. I also thought about how in WW1 it was all guys and know there are women. The only problem is they are being sexually molested. So has solider health care really been taken care of or is it still a big problem? Another example was when a soldier in an army camp shot 7 people because he was exposed to harsh battle field conditions and needed therapy. The main thing I saw whenever I connected the solider treatment to now a days is there are a lot more mentally repercussions then there all-physical. Even though the technology has changed soldiers are still not being taken care of.

Vietnam Project
Artist Statement
My art piece is a clay model of a barrel of Agent Orange. It has a natural forest on top and a forest effected by Agent Orange on the bottom. My perspective statement is Agent Orange, a master of killing of everything in its path, destroyed the harmless land and the people of Vietnam. What I am trying to say with my piece is how Agent Orange was a horrible thing to use on the land and people in Vietnam. The chemical left a mark on the land and it had horrible effects. Just like a before and after picture my barrel is showing what the chemicals can do to a beautiful forest. One of my artist decisions that really put the before and after effect into play is the airplane. This airplane is supposed to represent a c-123 which is the aircrafts the dropped and sprayed Agent Orange over Vietnam.
For me to get my best looking piece of art to you I went though multiple refinements and improvements on my project. The first refinement I did was once I had my final barrel all painted I went back and looked for any white. Going back with a tiny paint brush and the right paint I made my art look more completed. To insure that my art came all together I checked the paint I used. For a nice blend of colors you don’t want too many contrasting colors. One thing you do want though is fine lines. What I did to make my paint lines the best as possible was to get a small brush. With a smaller brush I could get the paint in a better more accurate line.
How I came to create a before and after barrel is an interesting road. I got the idea of an Agent Orange barrel from our reading and note taking in class. I wanted to know the true bad side of the Vietnam War and why we regret it so much. I went online and found out about Agent Orange. I wanted to make a physical object that you could hold and see the physical destruction. That’s how I came upon the next idea of a before and after effect. For that I was looking at images on the internet and I saw one picture of a plane flying over a forest and one over a dead forest. At that point I had the idea to combine them all and that’s how I created my before and after barrel.
